Winery wastewater management is critical for its commercial and environmental performance as it can have great impact on vineyards and on grape production.

Wine production consumes large amounts of water, which is converted into wastewater.

Some of those activities are:

  • Clean in-place activities, wastewater that comes from site cleaning.
  • Tank and equipment washing.
  • Bottling activities, wastewater produced from sterilizing bottles.
  • Cooling Water, usually produced if there isn’t a closed-circuit cooling

Winery wastewater streams are characterized, with high organic load, suspended solids, acidic or alkaline pH and high concentration of nutrients.

Environmental Impact

The main impacts of disposing untreated wine wastewater are:

  • Eutrophication
  • Soil and water toxicity
  • Odors
  • Reduction of soil productivity

Benefits of processing and reusing your winery byproducts

  • Reuse for irrigation, therefore, reduce water consumption.
  • Enrich soil with recycled nutrients.
  • Reduce Odor.
  • Avoid fines and gain profit.
  • Have full control of your process remotely.

In Greener Than Green Technologies, we offer customized solutions to treat and reuse the produced wastewater of your winery.

Total Organic Carbon (TOC) History

TOC is a popular analytical technique in water quality testing, as seen in many official analytical methods today. The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), European Pharmacopoeia (EP) and Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP), recognize TOC as a required test for purified water and water for injection (WFI). Click here for additional information on the TOC Theory.

Teledyne Tekmar has a long-standing Total Organic Carbon (TOC) brand rapport from Dohrmann going back to the 1960s. Since Teledyne Tekmar evolved from Dohrmann, 5 generations of TOC combustion analyzers and 4 generations of TOC UV/Persulfate Analyzers have been developed for ultimate customer satisfaction. Each generation demonstrates vast technology improvements over its predecessor leading to today's industry-leading models: the Fusion, the Torch and the Lotix.

Teledyne Tekmar excels in this industry demonstrated through our dedication in resolving customer needs and concerns, and providing cost-effective beneficial products and services.  These focus areas direct our development process and guides our application support to continuously renew our directions and goals.  Because many companies face moderate workforce turnover rates that make easy-to-learn products essential to minimize lead times to productive personnel.  Teledyne Tekmar has taken this to heart by spending significant time designing cutting-edge user interfaces that feel natural and are easy-to-use for the next generation workforce.

The Fusion was designed with the pharmaceutical and drinking water applications in mind. With its extremely low detection limit of 0.2 ppbC and its ability to handle high levels of carbon, acid, particulates, and salt, it is a very versatile analyzer for many sample matrices. The accuracy of the Fusion's UV/Persulfate oxidation is unmatched. UV/Persulfate has very little background carbon, lower than TOC combustion systems, making it the best choice for drinking water and ultra-pure water applications.

The Torch, full of helpful features and automated analysis processes, is our premium TOC combustion analyzer.  For example, it practically does the work for you by making serial dilutions of stock standards to form a calibration curve and so much more.
In addition, the Lotix is an example of Tekmar applying customer input relating to difficult to analyze samples that traditionally would have been highly diluted or filtered in the past.  With the vast detection range and robustness on the Lotix, dilution and filtration is no longer required for samples less than 20,000 ppmC and particles less than 0.8 mm in diameter. The Lotix, the newest combustion analyzer, provides a low-cost TOC solution while still providing you with the accuracy demanded by the toughest laboratory analyst.

Our customers are our highest priority. We are always driving the TOC product lines forward to provide easier-to-use solutions and more robust application for challenging sample matrices. Our support does not stop at the point of sale. We have a dedicated customer support team with decades of experience waiting to resolve your TOC demands and challenges.

TOC Overview

TOC analyzers can measure:

  • Total carbon (TC)
  • Total organic carbon (TOC)
  • Inorganic carbon (IC)
  • Nonpurgeable organic carbon (NPOC)

TOC measurement involves:

  • Oxidizing organic carbon in a sample
  • Detecting and quantifying the oxidized carbon (CO2)
  • Presenting the result in units of mass of carbon per volume of sample

NDIR Pressurization Overview

Pressurized detection, or static read, is a technique used for concentrating the CO2 produced by the oxidation of the sample. The technique can be used for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. In this section the basics of the pressurization technique will be described. Click for more on NDIR Pressurization Overview.

Raman spectroscopy is used across industries to:

  • Measure organic and aqueous samples with minimal to no sample preparation
  • Identify chemicals without labels
  • Measure without destroying the sample
  • Measure solids, powders, liquids, slurries, gas samples
  • Provide real-time qualitative and quantitative information in second

HOW IT WORKS

Our simple-to-use, one-click instrumentation uses a laser as the light source. The sample is illuminated, and the filtered scattered Raman photons are dispersed onto an imaging detector. The intensity of the dispersed photons onto the detector are plotted as a spectrum. The information-rich spectrum contains unique chemical information to determine both chemical identity and concentration.

Raman technology is regularly used in research, product development, process development, manufacturing, process control and quality control in many industries; biotech, food and beverage, petrochemical, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and oil and gas industries.

ADVANTAGES TO RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY

Raman spectroscopy is a well-established vibrational spectroscopy technique for determining both qualitative and quantitative molecular information from almost any type of sample (e.g. solid, liquid or gas). It is highly suitable for real-time process analysis and control applications because it provides direct information, quickly about the chemical bonds that change during reactions or processes. A significant advantage of Raman spectroscopy is that no sample preparation is required and the measurements can be carried out conveniently with immersion or stand-off probe technology.

Non-destructive measurement
Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive, optical measurement technique that allows a sample to be measured multiple times without sample degradation.

Optical measurement
If you can see the sample we can measure it with Raman: measurements can be performed through packaging, at distances and at high temperatures and pressures.

Qualitative and quantitative
Raman spectroscopy can be used to quickly, within seconds, identify a molecule’s composition (qualitative) as well as determine the concentration of the molecule (quantitative).

Label-free chemical structure differentiation
Raman spectroscopy accurately measures small changes in material and chemical structure in a wide variety of substances without the need for isotopic or fluorescent labels.

Raman spectroscopy works with many sample types (liquids, solids, slurries, powders, gasses, aqueous). Unlike in Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, water signal does not overwhelm the spectrum.

Raman spectroscopy is indifferent to excitation wavelength
Raman spectra collected on instruments having different excitation sources look very similar. A major advantage when comparing library Raman data acquired using different instruments.

USES OF RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY

The potential of Raman spectroscopy is far reaching. Its label-free, non-destructive nature makes it useful for situations where there is optical access to the sample and chemical analysis is required.

  • Track molecule structure changes in materials (including carbon)
  • Verify accurate compound and concentration in compounded medicines
  • Track crystallinity changes
  • Identify substances, including minerals and gemstones
  • Identification of molecular polymorphic forms
  • Evaluate pressure or stress on a structure
  • Assess the direction or orientation of molecules
  • Analyze single-cells and tissue for disease diagnosis
  • Study molecular hydration shells to determine aggregation
